KIWANIS CLUB OF ELLICOTT CITY SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City, Inc. will annually award up to fourteen thousand dollars ($14,000) to assist scholastically advanced students, in financial need and living in Howard County, to attend an accredited university or community college.  These scholarship funds, once awarded, may be applied for each of the four (4) years or two (2) years in an accredited university or community college respectively. For the initial award, the applicant must also submit an essay.

TO INITIALLY QUALIFY, A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT MUST:

1.     Demonstrate financial need supported by standard questionnaire.

2.     Be a resident of Howard County for a period of three consecutive years prior to making application.

3.     Maintain a 3.0 grade point average through the completion of the first semester of the senior year in a Howard County Public High School.

4.     Submit an essay.

5.     Agree to participate in at least one community service project each year of the scholarship.

PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING FOR THE INITIAL AWARD:

1.     Secure a KCECS (Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City Scholarship) application from the Guidance Department of any Howard County public high school of the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City web site (www.ellicottcitykiwanis.com). Complete and submit this application (4 pages). All data must be entered.

2.     Submit records of scholastic grades from the first year to the end of the first half of the Howard County senior high school the student is currently attending. The student must have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average through the completion of the first half of the senior year. This record should be in a sealed envelope from the school.

3.     Submit an essay describing what the student considers citizenship in the community to be and what he/she could do to improve active participation in the community by local Kiwanis clubs. The essay should be no less than two (2) or more than four (4) typed, double-spaced pages.

4.     Submit evidence from Howard County school records that the student has resided in Howard County for the previous three (3) years. Previous school records are acceptable.

5.     Provide a photocopy of your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. This should reflect the financial data that you submit to the Federal Processor.

6.     Submit the correctly completed application form and associated papers postmarked or hand delivered by midnight March 15 to:

SELECTION PROCESS:

1.     A committee from the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City will collect and review the applications and make the selection by May 1.

2.     All papers must be signed at the appropriate places and all papers stated above must be included. Lack of signatures or necessary forms may cause the application to be disallowed.            

3.     The amount of the award for the first year of college will be up to three thousand five hundred ($3,500) dollars. The money will be placed in the student's account at the college and may be used for tuition, textbooks, and board.

TO RENEW THE SCHOLARSHIP, THE COLLEGE STUDENT MUST:

1.     Secure a KCECS (Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City Scholarship) renewal application from the:

2.     Provide evidence of successful course completion for a minimum of twenty-four (24) credit hours for the preceding school year and a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. The total amount of the award will equally divided by the 4 years the student is in college or three thousand five hundred ($3,500) per year.

3.   The Awards Committee of the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City will advise the student of their decision for continued financial support by July 15.

4.   The essay requirement is waived after the initial award.

5.     The decision of the selection committee is final.

6.    The required community service project may be done in cooperation with the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City.

7. It is the responsibility of he student to ensure the tuition bills are submitted to the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City before October 31 for the fall semester and March for the spring semester. If the tuition bills are not received by these dates, the tuition for that semester could be forfeited.

The scholarship awards will be made without discrimination as to race, creed, gender, or national origin of the recipients and they shall be extended without limitation because of physical disability of the potential recipients.
